Tell
about the opportunities in railroading that interest you most and why.
The railroads have played very important roles in the building of the United States, and increasing our prosperity. In the middle of the 1900's, when you got a job with the railroad, you could plan to work for that railroad for your whole career. These days, many of the smaller railroads have been bought and combined into a handful of large (Class 1) railroads.
The railroads have many different jobs, and different departments. There are jobs operating the trains (the on-train crew), as well as servicing, repairing and rebuilding them. There are jobs building track, structures (building and bridges), power and signalling. There are crafts- and trades-persons, and there are professional and management roles.
For this requirement, you should think about what you would like to do, and look at some of the jobs that the railroads have available. Pick your favorite jobs, and tell why you would like to do those jobs.

There are currently 120 active merit badges that can be earned by Boy Scouts today, and scouts can find information about all of these on the Internet at the Merit Badge Research Center (MBRC) website, including the Railroading merit badge requirements. The MBRC has worksheets for most of the current merit badges.
